GPRA supports the next generation of GPs and RGs to practise safely and co-design clinical AI tools under new partnership

Future General Practitioners will play a key role in shaping clinical AI tools under a new partnership between General Practice Registrars Australia (GPRA) and Lyrebird Health.

Lyrebird Health, the Australian-owned clinical AI company behind one of the country's most widely used AI medical scribes, will establish a GPRA member national working group to co-build the future of clinical AI.

GPRA President Dr Chris Dickie said this was a unique opportunity for GPRA's 22,000 members, who reflect every stage of the journey to becoming a GP or Rural Generalist (RG), to drive quality and safe digital innovation.

"AI is rapidly changing the way community-based care is delivered, from the growing use of clinical documentation tools like Lyrebird to patients presenting with AI-assisted health enquiries," said Dr Dickie.

"Working with Lyrebird, we can ensure the next generation of GPs and RGs can safely and confidently navigate this new technology and directly contribute to its development.

"This exciting new partnership gives future GPs and RGs a seat at the table shaping the tools they will use for the rest of their careers."

Doctors in training have the most at stake

Lyrebird spokesperson Dr Ray Boyapati said the doctors currently in training have more at stake in how clinical AI is adopted than any other group in general practice.

"They are forming the clinical and technology habits that will shape how medicine is practised for decades to come, and they are doing it at the moment clinical AI moves from novelty to everyday tool," said Dr Boyapati.

"That transition is already happening. What's missing is guidance, confidence and a trusted point of view.

"This is a long-term commitment, not a one-off. We'll be working with GPRA members to understand what they actually need from clinical AI and what genuinely works in everyday practice.

"The doctors using these tools should be the ones shaping them, and that's what we're building with GPRA."

What GPRA members receive

Commencing from 2027, the partnership also provides GPRA members with 12 months' free access to Lyrebird Pro and an AI-confidence curriculum covering AI-safe practice, billing confidence and portfolio careers.

Dr Dickie said the Lyrebird benefits join GPRA's growing list of exclusive offers and resources to support members' training and careers.

"AI scribes are an exciting tool that I use in my own practice, allowing me to better focus on my patients and save time on administrative tasks," said Dr Dickie, a newly-Fellowed GP working in New South Wales.

"Like any tool you use in medical practice or training, it's important to discuss its use with your manager or supervisor, and follow the guidelines of your practice, training college, hospital or medical school."
