The UK's largest ambient AI implementation

The NHS across South West London is deploying Lyrebird Health's ambient AI platform to support up to 20,000 clinicians over the next four years, representing the largest deployment of ambient voice technology in the UK to date.

The deployment spans four major NHS trusts working together through the South West London Acute Provider Collaborative:

  • St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust,
  • Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust,
  • Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, and
  • Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust.

The rollout will onboard 10,000 clinicians by Year 1, scaling to 20,000 by Year 2.

Deep integration with Oracle Cerner Millennium

All four trusts use Oracle Cerner Millennium as their electronic patient record (EPR) system. Lyrebird's integration includes real-time patient syncing (demographics, medications, allergies, medical history), direct writeback of clinical notes and care plans into patient records and context via MPage, and AI-powered form population that significantly reduces manual data entry.

For the first time in the UK, this deployment includes automated clinical coding and RTT (Referral to Treatment) automation. Clinical codes are generated automatically from consultation content, and RTT pathway data is captured and documented without manual entry, ensuring compliance with NHS operational standards while eliminating administrative bottlenecks.

The unified Oracle Cerner Millennium environment across all four trusts creates a standardised technical foundation, reducing implementation complexity and ensuring consistent clinician experience across sites.

Returning time to patient care

By automating documentation, the deployment aims to return thousands of hours to patient care. 20,000 doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals will have access to technology that drastically reduces time spent on paperwork.

"It's going to make a huge difference to the working lives of clinicians, making them able to generate letters far more quickly, documentation far more quickly which, at the moment, is a huge admin burden on clinicians, which leads to some very poor quality documentation, which can impact on patient safety," said Matthew Laundy, CCIO South West London ICS.

For patients, this translates to shorter wait times and more meaningful, face-to-face consultations where clinicians can maintain eye contact and therapeutic presence.

A collaborative approach to workforce challenges

The deployment demonstrates how large-scale NHS organisations can collaborate to solve systemic workforce challenges. Four major NHS trusts are implementing one unified platform with consistent training, governance, and support structures.

"South West London put this at the top of the priority list because it's recognised that this technology can give clinicians time to give back to care, improve the quality of care and improve the data quality. We know that clinicians are already using technology, but not technology that's supported by IT. So we wanted to make sure we had a scaled technology that's safe, secure, integrated into the EPR and does the job," said Martin Ellis, CDIO, South West London ICB.

Validation from the NHS

This deployment validates that ambient AI can genuinely support NHS clinical workflows when implemented properly. NHS procurement rigorously evaluates clinical safety, data governance, integration capabilities, and demonstrated outcomes. This deployment reflects confidence from NHS leadership that Lyrebird meets those standards.

The inclusion of automated clinical coding and RTT automation represents a UK first, demonstrating that ambient AI can deliver value beyond basic transcription. The four-year timeline signals sustained infrastructure investment to address persistent operational challenges in modern healthcare.

"We're really proud to be partnering with South West London to support clinicians across the trusts with technology that makes day-to-day clinical work easier. From the start, there's been a shared understanding across clinical, operational and technical teams that for this to work, it has to be safe, deeply integrated and genuinely helpful to clinicians. We're looking forward to working closely with teams across the trusts to support clinicians as they start using Lyrebird in day-to-day care," said Kai Van Lieshout, CEO of Lyrebird Health.

Lyrebird Health is honoured to support South West London. The trust these four NHS organisations place in our platform is responsibility we take seriously, and one we are committed to delivering on over the next four years and beyond.
