"It's like having a professional typist on call at any time of the day."

Clinical Immunologist Dr Liam Beiglari was spending 20 minutes per patient on dictation with his previous service. With Lyrebird, he saves 10 to 15 minutes per patient, runs on time, and finds the work enjoyable.

Twenty minutes per patient.
Gone to dictation.

Dr Liam Beiglari practices as a Clinical Immunologist at Macquarie Respiratory and Sleep. Like many specialists, he dictates his letters with the patient in the room. It keeps correspondence timely and accurate. But his previous dictation service had made the process slow and draining.

"With previous dictation services I would spend 10 minutes at the end of every consultation dictating the letter slowly to make sure the system detected my speech correctly. It would transcribe everything, including 'ums' and 'ahs'; and I would waste time describing to the system what I needed it to do: 'full stop, new line, new paragraph'."

After the consult, another 10 to 15 minutes would go into reformatting the transcript, correcting punctuation, and removing everything the tool had captured that it should not have. The total: around 20 minutes per patient, every patient.

"It would be about 20 minutes per patient. This is time I could spend with my family or my patients. Or just thinking about my patients' cases carefully."
Twenty minutes per patient.
Every single consultation.

The unlock: giving the system examples.

Dr Liam started with Lyrebird expecting a better transcription service. The turning point came when he understood how to get the most from it.

"Lyrebird outputs good notes 'out of the box' but it really shines once you start to get into the weeds and heavily prompt it to give you what you want. Learning that giving the LLM examples was the best way to achieve this was a game changer."

The key realisation: he could dictate directly into Lyrebird and it would format the letter precisely, every time. He is also in the process of moving macros across from his previous system.

"Being able to prompt the LLM to output dictations exactly the way I like it has saved me a lot of time and been a nice quality of life improvement. I am in the process of moving macros over from my previous system and I appreciate that Lyrebird lets me speed up my work that way."

Running to schedule and achieving his goal of reducing patient wait times.
"I save about 10–15 minutes per patient and it allows me to spend more time thinking about the patient and their clinical situation."
"I am also much more likely to run on time now which helps me achieve my goal of reducing wait times."

The thing he didn't expect.

Efficiency was what Dr Liam was looking for. What he did not anticipate was how the experience of doing the work would change.

"It's really fun! The system is easy to use, responsive, and works very well. Because of this it makes the editing process much easier and enjoyable. Since it's enjoyable and fun, I like my work more."

He is clear that his role remains to review and correct the output. The clinical judgement is his. But the experience of getting there has fundamentally changed.

"My job is to error correct the output. And it has certainly assisted me with completing my notes in a timely manner."
"Since it's enjoyable and fun,
I like my work more."

Knowing where the data goes.

Handling sensitive clinical information is a core part of Dr Liam's practice. Knowing exactly where patient data goes, and where it stays, was a meaningful part of his confidence in the tool.

"Directly stating that Lyrebird stores and processes data locally in Australia is great."
